Pipes & Tubes: common questions

ERW or seamless pipe — which do I need?

ERW pipe is formed from strip and welded along its length, and is the economical choice for structural, water and low-pressure lines. Seamless pipe has no weld seam and is specified for higher-pressure gas, oil and process duty. Both are available from ½" to 24".

What is the difference between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80?

Schedule is the wall-thickness series for a given nominal pipe size; Schedule 80 has a thicker wall than Schedule 40 and is rated for higher pressure. Your process or structural design sets the schedule.

Do you supply galvanized pipe to BS 1387?

Yes — galvanized pipe to BS 1387 in 6 m lengths with plain, bevelled or threaded ends, along with SHS and RHS hollow sections to ASTM A500.

Do pipes and tubes come with a mill test certificate?

Yes. Every lot of pipes and tubes is supplied with the mill test certificate and heat number. Use the "Request mill test certificate" button on this page to ask for the certificate with your quote.
