Short answer
For an accurate, comparable steel quote, send the supplier the standard and grade, every size with its quantity in tonnes or pieces, lengths, any cutting or bending, and the delivery location and access — and ask for mill test certificates with the material.
What to send with a quote request
- Product and standard/grade for each line, exactly as in the drawings (for example TMT rebar ASTM A615 Grade 60, IPE 300 S275JR).
- Sizes and quantities — tonnes for rebar, sections and plate; pieces or tonnes for pipe, sheet and bar.
- Lengths, or the bar bending schedule if you want rebar cut and bent.
- Any processing: cutting to length, drilling, priming or galvanizing.
- Delivery address, access for a truck, offloading arrangements and the date you need material on site.
- Whether you need mill test certificates or an independent lab test.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Same standard and grade on every quote — a cheaper line in a lower grade is not a saving.
- Same weight basis: theoretical (chart) weight or actual weighbridge weight.
- Whether delivery, cutting and bending are included or extra.
- Whether taxes are included or shown separately, and how long the price is valid.
- Whether mill test certificates come with the material.
When the steel arrives
- Count bundles or pieces against the delivery note.
- Match tag heat numbers to the mill test certificates and keep the certificates on file.
- Compare the weighbridge slip with the theoretical weight.
- Store steel off the ground on supports and keep different sizes and grades apart.

What is the difference between theoretical weight and actual weight?
Theoretical weight is calculated from size and length using standard unit weights. Actual weight is measured on a weighbridge. They differ slightly because of rolling tolerance, so agree which one the price is based on.
