Steel Suppliers in Pakistan: Mills, Importers and Stockists Explained

Updated 5 min readBy OR Steels

Short answer

Pakistan's steel supply chain has three layers: mills that roll rebar and some sections from scrap and billets, importers that bring in structural sections, plate, coil and pipe through Karachi port, and stockists that sell mixed lots with processing and delivery. Buy by standard and grade, insist on a mill test certificate, and choose the layer that matches your quantity and timeline.

How steel reaches a site in Pakistan

  1. Mills — electric arc and induction furnaces melt scrap and billets and roll them into rebar (sariya) and some merchant sections. The larger rebar mills are around Karachi, Lahore and the Peshawar–Islamabad corridor.
  2. Importers — most structural sections (IPE, HEA/HEB, UB/UC), heavier plate, hot- and cold-rolled coil and seamless pipe are imported, mainly through Karachi, and sold by the container, bundle or coil.
  3. Stockists and traders — hold stock from both, sell by the piece, bundle or tonne, and add cutting, bending, drilling, priming and delivery.
  4. Site or workshop — receives material with a delivery note, weighbridge slip and the mill test certificate for each heat.

Standards you will see on quotes

Common standards by product
ProductTypical standardsNote
TMT rebarPS 1879 (Pakistan Standard), ASTM A615 Grade 40 / 60Grade 60 (420 MPa) is the usual RCC specification
Structural sectionsASTM A36, EN 10025 S275JR / S355JRMostly imported; profile names IPE, HEA, HEB, UB, UC
MS plate and sheetASTM A36, SS400, EN 10025Cold-rolled and galvanized sheet to DX51D / JIS grades
PipeASTM A53 Gr B, API 5L, BS 1387 / EN 10255GI pipe is ordered by nominal bore and class
The standard and grade must appear on the quotation, the delivery documents and the mill test certificate.

Which supplier to buy from

  • Mill or dealer: one product, full-truck quantities, a project schedule that allows mill lead time.
  • Importer: sections, plate or pipe sizes that local mills do not roll, in container or bundle quantities.
  • Stockist: mixed sizes, smaller or urgent lots, cut-and-bend or cut-to-length, delivery to site.

Many projects use all three: rebar from a mill dealer, sections from an importer, and a stockist for top-ups, processing and the sizes that run short mid-project.

Comparing suppliers fairly

  • Same standard and grade on every quote.
  • Same weight basis (theoretical or actual) and the same tax treatment.
  • Delivery, cutting and bending included or priced separately — stated either way.
  • Mill test certificates with the material, not promised later.
  • Price validity in writing; steel is repriced frequently.

Where OR Steels fits

Frequently asked questions

Is Pakistani rebar made to international standards?

Rebar from established mills is produced to PS 1879 and/or ASTM A615, and the mill test certificate states the standard, grade and tested values for each heat. Always ask for the certificate.

Why are most steel beams in Pakistan imported?

Local mills concentrate on rebar and smaller merchant sections. Wide-flange beams, heavier plate and seamless pipe are mostly imported, which is why section availability depends on importers' stock and shipping schedules.

How far ahead should I order steel for a project?

Stock items from a stockist can usually be delivered within days; mill lots and imported sections may need weeks. Share your programme with the supplier early and ask for lead times in the quote.
